Start with time trial for measured competition

Compete against the clock with a classed car and defined passing rules. Build a learning record before choosing more time trial or a racing application.

Choose the clock as your first competitor

Time trial fits a driver who wants a competitive objective without immediately racing for position. Timed laps make preparation and consistency visible. Cars may share the track, but the format and passing rules differ from wheel-to-wheel racing.

Decide whether your goal is a class result, more consistent execution, or evidence for a later racing application. Bring your HPDE history, instructor feedback, car specification, and recent video or data. If situational awareness still consumes all your attention, another instructed event may be the better immediate choice.

The driver and the car are checked separately

The SCCA eligibility page requires membership, a valid government-issued driver’s license, the ability to meet session demands, and an accepted time-trial or competition license. Its novice license is available to eligible members with little or no competitive track experience and lists annual membership. Minors have additional approval and waiver requirements.

Ask officials which license, experience group, passing protocol, and car class apply. Match the actual modifications, tires, and safety equipment to the selected program’s current rules. Check the class rules before you buy parts.

A time-trial license is separate from a wheel-to-wheel license, and different organizations may assess the same history differently.

Measure more than the fastest lap

Define a session objective before going out. Review brake release, repeated corner errors, traffic management, and the spread of comparable clean laps. Note tires, conditions, and interruptions so you read a slower time in context.

How I help

I help you choose the question, use sim practice to rehearse it, and review track video and data afterward. We separate a driving correction from a setup experiment. Change one meaningful variable, then check whether the result repeats.

Choose the next experience deliberately

Stay in time trial if the competition and schedule fit. Move toward club racing when wheel-to-wheel traffic, a compliant race car, race-school requirements, and the operating budget match the goal. Keep accurate event records and official signoffs. They support an application.

Questions before entering

Does a time-trial license transfer directly to a race license?

It depends on the organization. For example, PCA’s 2026 experienced-racer transfer route does not accept time-trial licenses. Follow the target organization’s actual application path.

Do I need a purpose-built race car?

That depends on the program, class, modifications, and safety rules. Ask officials about the specific car.

Can two drivers share the car?

Ask the organizer about separate entries and session scheduling. A shared car in time trial is not a shared-stint endurance race.
