Practicing endurance in the simulator: three drills

David's 2025 Sebring sim notes name three drills. They are lead and follow, talking through sight lines, and a tire warming out lap. This guide explains each one and how to run it.

David Hodge Jr ran Sebring sessions in the iRacing simulator in 2025. His coaching notes name three drills that any driver can borrow.

What the note says

After the first session he wrote a list headed “Drills”.

The same notes carry a few lines about the habits behind the drills.

The notes also contain lap data and speed targets. This guide leaves those out. The drills do not need them.

Why it matters in a shared car

A shared car gives each driver less time in the seat. The simulator adds repeatable time. It cannot copy the heat, the grip or the consequences of a real race car, so treat it as practice for decisions and habits. The simulator guide explains how to set up a useful routine.

These three drills practice things a team race asks for. They are following a car, seeing early and getting tires ready after a stop.

One drill

Pick one of the three. Do the drill for twenty minutes, then stop and write what you learned.

Lead and follow. One driver leads and the other follows. Swap places every few laps. The follower watches the leader’s line and compares it with their own. The leader describes what they are trying to do. Neither driver is racing.

Talk through the sight lines. Drive a few laps and say aloud where your eyes are. Say “turn in point”, “apex curb”, “exit curb” and “next braking marker”. Saying it aloud shows where you look too late. It also gives a coach or a friend a way to follow your thinking.

Out lap tire warming. Start each stint on an out lap. Practice getting the tires ready before you push. Use a method you and your coach agree on, and keep it the same each time. Repeat on three or four out laps and write down how the car feels at the end of each.

Choose the drill that matches your biggest gap. End the session with one conclusion and one next task.

Where this fits

This is a home practice guide. Use the simulator start guide for the full routine, and the WRL guide for the type of race these drills prepare you for.
