David Hodge Jr kept a food and water plan for a 2024 WRL race weekend. This guide reports that plan and the logistics around it. It is a plan from one driver. It is not advice about what you should eat or drink.
What the note says
The plan sits under a Barber heading in David’s 2024 WRL series notes. It has a food prep list and a snack list.
Food prep.
- 93/7 ground beef, 3 lbs
- 4 steaks
- white rice
- sweet potatoes
- eggs
- bananas
- yogurt cups
Snack bags.
- coconut chips
- peanuts
- dried blueberries
- chocolate of some kind
Protein balls.
- creamy no-stir peanut butter
- honey
- protein powder
- rolled oats
David also wrote logistics notes after the weekend.
- The hotel has a microwave, and so does the track.
- “water jugs worked well”
- “bring 2 water bottles w/bag to pit”
- “microwave access validated everywhere or buy”
- “sous vide steaks next day post-race”
- “make checklist templates for each race weekend”
Under his testing notes he wrote that the food prep and the prep snacks “worked well”.
Why it matters in a shared car
A team weekend is crowded. Drivers share a garage, a schedule and sometimes one cooler. The plan helps because it is written down. Nobody has to decide at the track what to bring or where to heat it.
A written plan also helps a team compare notes. One driver can say what they packed and what they would change.
Your own needs depend on you. Ask a qualified professional about your diet and about drinking enough during an event. This guide cannot answer those questions.
One drill
The drill is a checklist, not a diet. Build it before the weekend and update it after.
- List everything you plan to bring for food and water. Use David’s list only as a format.
- Next to each item, write where it will be stored and how it will be heated, if it needs heat.
- Check the hotel and the track for a microwave and a fridge. If you cannot confirm one, add a backup to the list.
- Pack the water bottles and the bag you will take to the pit.
- After the weekend, write one line for each item. Say whether you used it, whether it was easy to carry and what you would change.
- Save the checklist as a template for the next race weekend.
David’s own lesson was the same. He wrote that he needs checklist templates for each race weekend.
Where this fits
A written checklist helps most before your first team weekend, such as a WRL event. Use the same habit for your gear, your documents and your radio.
