Fit starts with the team culture
24 Hours of Lemons fits a driver who enjoys resourcefulness, practical preparation and sharing a race car with a team. The humor sits on top of real wheel-to-wheel racing. Car control, flags, traffic awareness and respect for teammates remain essential.
Start with your goal and honest experience. If you have never driven a circuit, HPDE covers the basics before a race. Volunteering or joining a team’s preparation work shows you how the operation runs.
The car rule
Eligible cars are mass-produced, four-wheeled vehicles originally legal for U.S. highway use, with additional size, weight and safety provisions. The $500 purchase-and-preparation rule has defined exemptions. Safety equipment and listed items such as wheels, tires and brake components do not count toward that limit.
The rule is a valuation rule. Cage construction, personal safety gear, entry, fuel, transport, lodging, maintenance, repairs and damage cost real money. Keep purchase records and preparation evidence. Organizer valuation and technical inspection apply to every car.
Judges assign Classes A, B and C during inspection using their assessment of the car’s potential. An unusual build creates more support and approval work.
Co-driving and entry
An entry is one race car and at least two drivers. Full 24-hour or longer races require at least three. Drivers rotate through the car. There are no passengers.
Drivers need a valid U.S. or international driver’s license and a valid Lemons Competition Membership. Lemons does not recognize or reciprocate other competition licenses. Minors have additional requirements. New drivers must attend the rookie meeting, and all drivers must attend required drivers meetings. Cars must pass inspection, and officials may remove unsafe cars or people.
The live rules page includes changes with explicit effective dates, including 2027 pricing and equipment language. The 2027 calendar is posted.
Prepare more than the car
Ask how drivers are selected, how time is allocated and how the team handles mechanical failure before your turn. Fit every driver with full gear. Practice emergency egress, belts, communication and the fueling procedure. Lemons prohibits anyone being in, entering or exiting the car while hot-pit fueling is underway.
Agree on consumables, repair authority, damage responsibility and cancellation terms in writing. Watch how the team responds to a warning light or a driver asking to stop.
How I help
I coach goals-first assessment at the track and in the simulator, and I review your video and data with you. Compare ChampCar for a different points-based car system, or Lucky Dog for its separate eligibility rules.
Questions before committing
Can I race for $500 total?
No. The vehicle-value rule excludes major safety and operating expenses. Build an all-in budget for your team and event.
Does my external race license replace Lemons membership?
No. Lemons does not recognize or reciprocate other competition licenses.
What class does an old or slow-looking car get?
Judges assign classes at inspection. Do not buy a car on an assumed classification.
