Machine Nerve is David Hodge Jr’s motorsport software company. Every tool started at a race weekend. This note is about the first one, at WRL Sebring in 2024.
The need
David wrote his race notes after the Sebring weekend. Two lines in them are about the radio. The team missed the green-flag call on Saturday. A radio issue also missed a restart on Sunday.
The same notes record a second point. Race control speaks to the field in a fixed, structured way. David wrote that a tool could capture the radio audio and sort the call-outs. He wanted the calls turned into text so a team could sort and filter them.
The tool
Machine Nerve now turns radio call-outs into text. It captures the radio audio from the channels a team selects. It splits the audio into separate calls. It writes each call as text. It keeps the raw recording beside the text, so a person can check a call against what was said.
A team can then read the call-outs and search them after the session ends.
Why it was built at the track
The need came from a real weekend. A missed call is easy to miss in the moment and easy to find in text.
