Machine Nerve is David Hodge Jr’s motorsport software company. Every tool started at a race weekend. This note is about Petit Le Mans in 2024.
The need
David’s notes from the weekend cover spotting, pit stops, tire sets and the timing screen a team watches. The notes end with a list of product ideas. Three of them are about live timing.
- Log the team’s own car, with its sectors.
- Draw a position chart.
- Keep track of when competing cars last pitted.
The notes add one more idea. Use the history of earlier stints and the refuel time to project the fuel in a rival’s car.
The tool
Machine Nerve now shows live timing, a position chart and when rivals last pitted. A team sees the order of the field through the race. It sees which cars have stopped recently and which cars have not.
Why it was built at the track
The list of ideas came out of a weekend of watching a long race from the timing screen. Machine Nerve now covers the live timing, the position chart and the pit history.
